The American Dental Association and the Oral Cancer Foundation encourage people to participate in Oral Cancer Awareness Month during April. A self-examination is a good way to start. But, your dental care provider (dentist and/or hygienist) will do a thorough exam of your mouth and tongue. Early detection is key to locating precancerous lesions. Your Bearable Dentistry dentist can help you stay on top of your oral health which includes more than just your teeth. Risk factors for mouth and throat cancers include tobacco use, heavy consumption of alcohol (particularly when they are used together), and infection with the human papillomavirus, which is better known as HPV.

Self examination is a good place to start. Your dentist will conduct a thorough oral cancer screening during your regular exam.
